little books for my little one

it is never too early to instill good reading habit in your little one. the books or reading materials need not be expensive, as long as it has bright colours and patterns, different textures, crinkly and squeaky sounds, it can give endless hours of exploring. reading to your little one is a good way to increase her vocabulary and to improve her listening skills. you can read almost anything to her. sometimes i would show Babycakes catalogs from Giant or Tesco, sometimes i show her Dominos Pizza menu or flyers that i get stuck on my car. i would also read the newspaper to her too but she would only pay attention for a couple of minutes or so before she started to lose interest.
we have several books for her but she can't hold the books by herself yet, let alone turn the pages.
bought these books online from MyBaby Helper. managed to get some discount for buying a lot.

yup, since she can't turn the pages or hold the book, she lost interest within 3 minutes or so.

i searched online and bought a few cloth books for her from Gifts From Heaven. they sell really cheap cloth books that i ended up buying 5 cloth books for Babycakes, with each costing a mere RM12. that is very reasonable as compared to RM39.90 or more each. the good thing about the site is that they have a disclaimer telling you if the item(s) are defective or dirty or if it's a ex-manufacturer stock or if some pages are printed upside down etc. they even said that customers who are particular are not advisable to buy.

there is nothing wrong with the cloth books that i purchased, except for one, which the page is a bit senget and the tag is upside down. other than that, all is fine.

Babycakes doesn't seem to mind at all. in fact, she even reads them upside down!

i was so excited to give her the books that day but i see that she is even more excited as she grabbed the book herself when i was busy taking pictures.

the duck book has a furry cover, squeaker and its wing has a crinkly sound.

this Garanimals book even has teethers for her to chew on.

the books kept her entertained for hours, which gives me time to do other things. i guess we can skip buying Grolier book set for now. they're really expensive! there's always MPH and Popular bookstores too which sell good books at reasonable price.

lunchtime shopping

in my previous post i said that if i go to the shops, i will always get something for my baby, didn't i? today i did just that. i'm glad that i don't work near shopping malls anymore. i've worked at Jalan Pinang once and hey, KLCC and Pavilion were my playground then. i can't imagine if i am still working there. i will surely spend most of my money and lunch time at either KLCC or Pavilion. phew~ that wouldn't be good for the pocket and for the future. my current office is in Hartamas and there are many shops, restaurants, cafes, boutiques, spas etc. thankfully there is only one shop (or at least one that i know for now) that sells babies' and kids' clothing. damn. there goes my money. i love to browse and look around but i manage to control and refrain myself from buying anything for babycakes. i mean, she has tons of clothes and some she hasn't even worn yet! but then the clothes and the gowns are just too adorable to resist. so far i've only bought her 3 pairs of socks (before she was born) and today i bought her 2 pieces of panties. not bad for self-control, right? *pat on my back*

a baby girl needs panties when she wears her gowns, right? *alasan*

Fisher Price panties for only RM6. trust me if they costs more than RM6, i would not buy. i'd love to get the printed ones, they are cuter but they only have size 0-3 months.

as for myself, i bought this pair of earring from F Block for RM10. their boutique is near my office and they sell pretty and cute ear rings and hair accessories ughhh. they're so cute and so cheap i just have to buy, no? i've bought several hair bands and ear rings too before this. note to self: stay away from F Block!!

the difference

ever since being a mum and back to work, i became more selfless. everything is about the baby. everything has got to be about the baby. she is on my mind 24/7, i can never stop thinking and worrying about her especially during the day when i'm at work and she's at the nursery.
what is she doing at this very moment? did she drink her milk? did they burp her after her milk? is the milk that i send enough for the day? is she behaving well at the nursery? are they treating her well? does she have enough stimulation in between naps? oh my. the more i think the more i become anxious. anyway let's see the difference before and after i had a baby.

BEFORE BABY
i can go to the shopping mall after work for some me time or buy some stuffs for dinner.

AFTER BABY
i have to go back straight without making any stops so that i can pick my babycakes at the nursery asap.

BEFORE BABY
i go to the shops and buy things for none other than myself (and the occasional stuffs for hubby).

AFTER BABY
if i go to the shops, i can never leave without buying a little something for my baby, be it a teeny weeny toy or a pack of socks. or a new pacifier. there must be something for her.

BEFORE BABY
i've no doubts about spending money for myself.

AFTER BABY
i hesitate to even buy a RM50 top for myself but i don't mind paying RM30 for a teething toy.

BEFORE BABY
hubby and i can go to any restaurants to eat.

AFTER BABY
hubby and i will see if the restaurants is a baby-friendly restaurant i.e not noisy, spacious enough for a stroller, there are separate sections for smoking and non-smoking, comfortable and not hot and stuffy etc.

BEFORE BABY
i can wear any kind of top when i go out.

AFTER BABY
i have to consider wearing a nursing-friendly top. i only have a few nursing tops and they are not so stylish. if i wear a baby tee, i would wear a tank top underneath. it's hot and not that comfortable but like i said, it has got to be about the baby.

BEFORE BABY
we can easily go up and down the floors at shopping mall using the escalator.

AFTER BABY
we have to wait for the elevator to get to different floors and sometimes it takes forever and it is almost always full. we then have to wait for another, which takes time. so we had to make sure which floor we want to go to so as not to waste time just by waiting for the elevator.

BEFORE BABY
i can sneeze and cough for as loud as i can.

AFTER BABY
i had to control and compress my sneeze and cough especially when the baby is sleeping.

BEFORE BABY
i couldn't care less about nose booger and ear wax except mine.

AFTER BABY
i get super excited and i feel like it's an achievement when i managed to suck out a nose booger out of her nose (with a nasal aspirator, of course). i also get super excited when i clean her ears and gosh who would have thought that someone so little can produce so much ear wax?? wow. oh i also love to see her 'high' face when i clean her ears. she would have her eyes half-closed, looking all high and feeling good when i clean her ears.

that's all i can think of at the moment. now i'm missing her like crazy especially after spending quality time with her during the long weekend. i miss golek-goleking with her in bed, in front of the tv, hear her babble away and screams at the top of her lungs (it's her new found habit), kissing her until she rimas hehe oh the list goes on and on.

damn it's only 12pm?

Project Irene part 1

when we were in Genting Highlands on New Year's day, I saw a booth making wax hand prints/figures. I wanted to have one done for my baby. however, it was cold and the thought of having to dip her little hand and little feet in the wax does not sound like a good idea at that time. besides, she might pop her little hand into her mouth. i dare not take the risk so we passed. one day i went to Toys R Us and found this kit.

i bought one and couldn't wait to do it with my baby.

it is really easy to do. the instructions are at the back of the box.

i used an egg mold in the shape of a heart to mold the dough.

you know how babies always clamp their fists right? it took me a few attempts to get it right. it was so hard to get her to open her hands to get a good print but we finally made it. it was left to air dry for a few days. i used a paper clip to write the date.

see what i mean? of course i washed her hand immediately after that.

there are two types of frames, black and white but i took white. the frame was plain so i bought some stickers from Jusco.

i decorated the frame with the stickers. luckily we have enough letters to spell her name.

there you go. my little artist showing off her first art project. she was sleepy but i made her hold the frame, thus the frown on her face. hehe. there will be many more Project Irene in the future. yeay!

oh what a year!

2011 has left us and boy was it a year all right! it was an awesome year. so much things happened and so many events took place. i can't be thankful enough. among the highlights of the year 2011 for me are:

  • i married my other half on 7 January 2011 (this means we are just a few days away to our 1st wedding anniversary)
  • i found out i was pregnant in February 2011
  • i started work at a new firm in April 2011
  • we moved in to our house in April 2011
  • i gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on 27 September 2011
  • i had my first (and hopefully the last) surgery on 2 December 2011

it was definitely an awesome year, alhamdulillah. of course there are bumps and trials but i am blessed to get a hubby AND a baby in the same year. i couldn't thank Allah for more. so here's to the year 2012 and hopefully it will be much more better than 2011. i look forward to being better in every aspect.

sleeping positions

my babycakes is 3 months young and of course, she hated it when i swaddle her to sleep. her favourite sleeping position is the starfish-style. just look at how blissful she looks with all fours spread out like that.

but look at her face when i swaddle her.

she would struggle and try to wiggle her way out of the swaddle. this one she's probably checking if i'm watching her so that she can slowly make her way out of the swaddle cloth.

success!! cheeky little bunny.

my first surgery

...and hopefully the last, insyaallah.

i underwent a laproscopy cystectomy or in layman's term (like me), an ovarian cyst removal surgery on friday, 2 december 2011. it all started when i went for my post-natal check up at Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC) 6 weeks after delivery. my gynae did an ultrasound and found a cyst measuring at about 9cm x 6cm. that is bigger than the size of the uterus itself. she asked me if i know that i've a cyst but of course i was just as surprised myself. all along when i went for my pre-natal check up at Hospital Tawakal (HT), it was never detected by my then gynae. and i have never had any symptoms that comes with a cyst. the gynae then told us that due to its huge size, it is better to remove it. if i do not remove it, in the event that it bursts or twists, i will be in severe pain and will require and emergency operation.

there are two options to remove it, one via open surgery like a c-section and the other is via laproscopy, which means doing small incisions on the tummy. between the two methods, of course i chose the latter because recovery and healing process are easier and faster as compared to the former. we went to few other hospitals to get a 2nd and 3rd and 4th opinion and after discussing and thoroughly going through the options, payment method and whatnot, we finally decided to have the surgery done at Sime Darby Medical Centre (SDMC).
long story short, i was scheduled for the surgery on friday, 2 december 2011 at 3.30pm and it will be performed by Dr. Delaila, who is a specialist. that friday morning, i had a bowl of oats for breakfast and started to fast since 7.30am. hubby and i then sent Irene to the babysitter (which of course i cried all the way to the babysitter and all the way to SDMC).

we arrived at SDMC at about 8.45am and went to register. i've been pre-registered earlier so the process was easy.

my tag. somehow rather it felt like i just had my hospital tag removed not so long ago and now i've to wear it again *sigh*. thankfully i've got my insurance and my medical card and i am entitled to a single room but unfortunately no single rooms are available so they put me on a waiting list. even a double room was not available then so they told us to wait. too bad i can't eat or drink anything. i then went to the nursery on level 6 and managed to squeeze a pumping session. yup' i brought my bpump with me to the hospital.

at about 10ish, the reception called and told that a double room is available at the moment so i was asked to go to the ward.

then a nurse came to check my blood pressure and temperature. after that, i was prepped for surgery. by prep, i meant being shaved by the nurse. then the nurse gave me the meds to move the bowel, the one that was inserted in your anal, similar to the one you get before delivery. not a pleasant experience i must say. i was then told to take a bath using a special liquid soap given by the nurse. after i took my bath, i put on the hospital gown and the nurse cleaned my belly button. yet another unpleasant experience. you know how 'sensitive' your belly button is, right?

big bro and sil took a half day leave so that they can accompany me. notice how everyone is busy with their gadgets? hmppphh.

at about 3.30pm, the nurses then came to my room as i need to be wheeled out to the operation theater (OT). at this point, a lot of things started to play in my mind. it felt just like in the movies but the only difference is that this time it is real and i am experiencing it! the OT is at level 1 so we went in the elevator and my heart started to beat fast. before entering the OT, i was asked a few questions and then after saying goodbye and kissing hubby's hand, i was then wheeled in. hubby was only allowed to a certain point only. inside, i was put at the holding area where i was put on drip. i hate it when they poke a needle through my vein. i asked the anesthetist when will i start feeling drowsy? he said that it was merely water to prevent me from dehydration since i've been fasting since morning. i was then left alone at the holding area for a good 15minutes or so but it sure felt like the longest 15minutes ever. i started to think about all kinds of things- my parents who are still in Mekah, my babygirl, especially my babygirl and everytime i think about her, i started to well up. and then there's the thought that what if the operation went wrong? what if i did not wake up? what if i bleed profusely? even though the surgery is in between major and minor, there is, of course a risk. after all, this is my first time in the OT. i then leave it to Allah.
soon after, they wheeled me into the OT and all i can see are the big lights, some gadgets, the steel table, a big screen, just like what you see in the movies. homaigod. saspen! at one point, i even felt like aborting the surgery altogether but it was too late. i laid down on the steel table, a number of nurses came, the anesthetist put some kind of liquid in the drip and into my vein and i felt a slight pain in my vein. then i was put on the gas mask and within seconds, i totally black out. it was like magic, i kid you not.
i don't know how long the surgery was but all i know is that the nurses woke me up and said that the surgery is over. they asked me to open my eyes. i tried to open my still drowsy eyes and i can immediately feel the pain on my tummy. i remembered making a 'mengerang' sound because it was just too painful. apparently after the surgery they put me back at the holding area for observation for about 1/2 hour. after given the all clear from the doctor, i was wheeled back into my ward and it was already 6pm. too bad i had to move from the bed that they wheeled me in to the bed in the ward. it.hurts.like.hell. i then slept until lil bro, big bro and sil came. then hubby also came after picking Irene up from the babysitter. the moment i looked at her, i felt very relieved and it was a perfect cure for my pain.

post-surgery.

my buah hati pengarang jantung. i can't bring myself to sit up, let alone to hold her in my arms. but having her lying beside me definitely helps. it hurts so bad to even move, laugh, cough, sit. now i know how much we use our tummy muscle to move about. the nurse would come by every now and then to check my temperature and blood pressure. at about 12am the doctor came and checked my condition. she also gave me the picture of the cyst that was removed together with a dvd of the procedure.

i have four of these plasters on my tummy. one on the left of my belly button, one on the right, one on the belly button itself and another one below the belly button.

this is where the drip was inserted.

on the right side, a tube with this container was attached to my tummy. this is to drain the darah kotor. i had to lug this container everytime i move. going to the toilet hurts like hell that i need the assistance of the nurse every single time. i need their help to help pull me up and out of bed and even to walk. i can't imagine the pain that women who had c-section had to go through. the next morning, when i woke up, not only does it hurt so bad, but my boobs were engorged too because i haven't pumped out the milk and my baby hasn't been feeding. so make that triple the pain! thankfully i have my pump with me.

these two persons especially, kept me strong. i felt soo sayu upon seeing hubby with my baby. the funny thing is, i've prepared her clothes, which ones to wear during the day, which ones to wear at night but of course, hubby put her in her sleepsuit. when asked, why put her in her baju tidur? hubby said 'kan hospital sejuk, pakai baju tangan panjanglah'. cute. and it does make sense. until today i still wonder why the hell hospitals have to be so damn cold anyway??

two nights without mummy and she had a scratch on her nose. hmpph. anyway i never got my single room. SDMC is almost always full huh? i was then discharged on sunday, 4 december 2011. alhamdulillah. serik ok! the tummy still hurts the first few days and i had to walk really slowly but soon the pain subsides and i resumed life back to normal. i got 3 weeks MC wooohooo! this means i get to spend more time with my babygirl!

i have removed the stitches on 13 december 2011 and this is how it looks like. just a teeny weeny incision and hopefully it will leave little or no scar at all.

the alcohol prep to be applied every time after bath to help it heal and dry faster.

it was one experience that i will never forget and i hope i will never have to go for another surgery, ever. when i was in so much pain, i questioned, "WHY ME?" but i soon realized that this is just a small test as compared to other less fortunate people who had to go through major operations. that definitely kept me grounded.
